The Mediterranean fan palm (Chamaerops humilis) is a compact, clumping palm with multiple trunks and stiff, fan-shaped leaves that range from deep green to blue-green. Native to the Mediterranean region, it has a rugged, shrubby form and typically grows 6–15 feet tall, making it well suited for smaller landscapes and accent plantings.
In north Texas, the Mediterranean fan palm is one of the most cold-hardy palms available. It can tolerate temperatures down to about 5–10°F once established. It performs well in USDA Zone 7b–8a, especially in full sun with good drainage. Its clumping habit offers some natural cold protection, but during severe freezes, mulching and covering the plant can help prevent leaf damage and ensure long-term survival.
