The Pindo palm (Butia odorata, sometimes listed as Butia capitata) is a medium-sized palm with a thick trunk and gracefully arching, blue-green, feather-like fronds that give it a soft, tropical look. It typically grows 15–25 feet tall and is known for producing small, fragrant orange fruits that are sometimes used for jelly.
In north Texas, the Pindo palm is considered one of the better cold-tolerant feather palms. Once established, it can handle temperatures down to about 10–15°F, with mature specimens sometimes surviving slightly lower temperatures for short periods. It performs best in USDA Zone 8a, especially when planted in full sun with excellent drainage. During extreme cold events, protecting the trunk and crown and mulching heavily around the base can help prevent damage.
